Why convert ASS to SRT?
ASS (Advanced SubStation Alpha) — and its predecessor SSA — is a rich subtitle format used by fansub groups and advanced players. It supports fonts, colors, positioning, karaoke effects and per-cue styling. The catch: outside tools like Aegisub, MPC-HC and mpv, support is thin. SRT remains the lingua franca — accepted by virtually every player, editor, video platform and translator tool.
What happens to the styling?
- Override tags like
{\i1},{\pos(192,40)}and{\c&HFF0000&}are removed automatically - Line breaks (
\N) are preserved as real line breaks - Hard spaces (
\h) become normal spaces - Timing precision is kept — ASS stores centiseconds, SRT stores milliseconds, so no accuracy is lost
Tolerant by design
The parser reads the field order from the Format: line in [Events], and falls back to the standard v4.00+ order if it's missing. Dialogue text containing commas is handled correctly, as are Windows/Mac line endings and stray blank lines.
