What is SBV?

SBV (SubViewer) is the caption format YouTube historically exported: timestamp pairs separated by a comma, followed by the caption text. Most non-YouTube software can't read it, so converting to SRT is the standard first step when repurposing YouTube captions.

How to get your SBV file from YouTube

  1. YouTube Studio → Subtitles → select the video
  2. Choose the caption track and download it (pick the SBV variant if offered)
  3. Drop the file above and convert
